You won't see any confirmation it worked, but if you mouse over the car, it will display the name. To do this, select the Sim, then interact with the car you wish to prefer and select the 'Make Preferred Vehicle' command. You can no longer set a Sim to 'own' a particular vehicle, but you can set a Sim to 'prefer' a vehicle. These are available in Build Mode > Doors, but only if you're building on a lot zoned to be a community lot the doors will not be there at all if you're on a residential lot.
